Three thousand Rand refugees at Capetown have petitioned the Queen for permission to return to Johannesburg. Private Jones, Victorian, has died from inflammation in South Africa. Details of the surprise effected by the Boers at Philippolis show that the inhabitants of the town connived at the enemy's entry. Lord Roberta has sent all those implicated out of the country. Lord Kitchener, by a night march, surprised and captured a Boer laager at Krngenpoort, a few miles north of Lydenburg. Several Boers were wounded and four captured. Lieut.-General Hunter is engaged in almost continuous skirmishes in the Bothaville-Bloemhof diutriot. Boers dressed in khaki threaten to Bhoot all prisoners in revenge for the action of the British in burning their homesteads. Oath-breakers are especially desperate. Others who refuse to fight are illtreated and starved. Troopers Pile and Eerr, New Zealanders, were slightly wounded near Zeernst. Melbourne, Monday. Lieut.-Calvert was killed at Bethel, Transvaal. He was a nephew of Mr Geo. Chirnside, of Werribee.
