PUPIL TEACHERS.

EESULT OP EXAMINATION. Mr Hill, Inspector, forwarded the following report; to the Education Board yesterday:— " I have the honor to forward for the information of the Board the results of the annual examination of pupil teachers, is usual, the examination was held synchronously in Gisborne and Napier on June 27th and following days. Altogether 64 pupil teachers are employed by the Board, but only 66 were examined, as the remaining eight already hold certificates of competency from the Education Department, and under tha pupil teachers' regulations they are exempt from further examinations. The tabulations submitted herewith contain the marks gained by each of the teachers in the various subjects in which they were examined. "One of the teaohers in the Second Tear took a set of papers, and she informed me that it was useless to continue further, as her father desired her to withdraw from the sohool as a pupil teaoher. The failures are nominal, and in the case of Miss Caughley, of the Third Tear, Dr. Moore certifies that she was suffering severely from influenza at the time of the examination, and I recommend that the failure in arithmetic be not counted against her, but that she be allowed a pass in the examination. ' The First and Second Tear teachers have done exceedingly well, the arithmetic writing, diotation, and in the oase of the girls, sewing, showing unusually good results. The Third Tear also, on the whole, have done well, but there is much weakness in the case of at least three of the Fourth Tear teachers. In anticipation of the January examination next year, all the Fourth Tear candidates who were examined by me should carefully notioe th 6 subjects in which they failed to score fair marks. A ploasinff feature in the examination is the fact that, with three exceptions, all the pupil teachers took one or more of the optional subjects, and some high marks were gained. The prizes given by the Board for the best work in the optional subjects I recommend to be divided equally between the following teachers : — Nellie Baker, Elfle Colebrook, Harrington Goulding, and Goorgina Mitchell.
