FOOTBALL.

Yesterday afternoon the annual football nmtoh Cabmen versus Bakere took place on the Eeoreation Ground, in the presence of a large number of people, and proved a most "interesting " fixture. The result was a draw, neither side scoring, contrary to the expectations of the followers of the "dough-pounders," who were naturally expected to ''rise " to the occasion, bnt on lining out it was found

that they could only mußter "leaven" men, but the other players who were "kneaded" arrived on the scene, and the game proceeded. The Cabmen made a vigorous onslaught, evidently under the impression that they were engaged "by Ihe hour," and one Jehu succeeded in crossing the line, but lost the ball. He, however, persisted in asserting that it was a " fare " try. Give-and-take (espeoially take) play ensued, which baffles description, the nondesoript appearance of the players, clad in all the colors of the rainbow, suggesting a case of " Morton's " pickles. Towards the finish the bakers became tired and commenced to " loaf," the Cabmen immediately got the "whips" out, but their efforts were

futile, and the game ended in a draw. Mr Hallamore was referee, and escaped unhurt.

On Saturday commences the first match of the second round. Pirates and Clive meet once more, and a fast and interest-

the season rather badly, but have since rallied together, and are determined to

lose no mutch in the second round. On

the other hand Pirates, who are runners up to Te Aute in the championship, will make strenuous efforts to retain their position, with the result that spectators will get their full sixpenny worth.

" Speotator " writes -.— I would draw the attention of the Rugby Union to the necessity of providing Beats for ladies on the south side of the ground. I feel certain that Buoh a boon would be fully appreciated by the fair sex, and the extra attendance would very soon pay for the outlay. The following will represent the Pirates Football Club next Saturday against Clive :— Franklin, Hoppy, Baird, Hillson, Bear, Eddy, Double, Mullaney, Kay, Hill, Telfer, Carlßon, Johnatone, Speedy, Strickland, Oliphant', Haokett, and Boyd.
