OUR COUNCILLORS.
LITTLE WAYS THEY HAVE,
At last night's Council meeting Cr. Edwards, acting in conformity with the recommendation of the Public Works Committee at the last meeting as to the advisability of acquiring a free public library for Napier, moved that Crs. M'Vay, Laws, Brown, and the mover bo appointed a eub-oommitteo to go into tha matter and bring up a report for next meeting.
Cr. Cohen : Perhaps it's an oversight, but the committee is rather one-sided.
Cr. Howman : It smells of the Athenamm. It is very easy to understand what the report will be. It will be " Athena'um."
The Mayor said it would be necessary to suspend the Standing Orders in order to carry the motion without notice.
Cr, Plowman: I object.
Subsequently Cr. Plowman offered no opposition, he said, " so long as the report is a fair one."
Cr. Brown entered a protest against any suggestion about unfair reports being brought up. The Mayor agreed that it was not a nice thing to suggest that tho committee would bring up an unfair roport. Cr. Edwards : I think it is a most unfair remark to mako, that the committee "Smells of the Athen;euin." I have nothiDg to do with the Athenieum beyond paying my guinea a year. However, I will withdraw from the committee and place Cr. Plowman's uamo on it instead. I simply propose these names because the members were handy. If it is thought neoessary, I will withdraw the motion nnd give notice for next met>ting. Notice was accordingly given.
