Three of our local men who were fortunate m being selected for the Fifth Contingent received a hearty send-off at the railway station to-day, The Mayor (Mr T. Drummond), on behalf of the citizens, presented each of them with a gold Maltese cross suitably engraved, and wished them every success and plenty of fighting. Afterwards the Key. Mr Eobertshawe stepped forward amongst the crowd and wished them God speed and a safe return. The hospital demonstration, postponed from last Sunday on account of the inclemency of the weather, takes place next Sunday when we hope the elements will be more kindly, although rain is much wanted for the country generally. At a special meeting of the Borough I Council held on Tuesday evening it was decided to oxtend the water Biipply to a number of streets not at present included in the service. More lamps are also beine erected, and if our city fathers would only take the rough footpaths in hand we would shortly become a model borough. A sitting of the Assessment Court was held here this morning, the S.M. (Mr A. Turnbull) presiding, but no objections to valuations required adjudication. Subsequently the S.M. sat to hear applications for renewals of pensions from three persons, all of whioh were granted, In the case of three new applications the applicants failed to put in an appearance and were unrepresented. The final match for the Cowper trophy was played on the Bowling Green yesterday, when Henderson and Thompson defeated £ansom and Wright, and bo became the winners of the ptize.
