HASTINGS.

[jBOM OUB OWK COBBKSPONDEHT.] •■ March 13, 1900. In order that Hastings folk may have the pleasure of participating in the hearty send-off to the members of the Fourth t Contingent on Thursday in Napier, it has been arranged to close all business establishments here at noon on that day, instead of keeping the usual Wednesday half-holiday. A very pleasant event took place to-day at the District School, when the headmaster unfurled for the first time the national flag generously donated by Mr G. H. Koaoh. The flag is a handsome one, measuring 20ft by 12ft. At the last meeting of the Sohool Committee it was deoided that a flagstaff to be affixed at the gable end of the principal Bohool should be purchased, but it would be far preferable if a proper flagstaff, halyard, &0., could be obtained The children of the sohool might, if authorised to do so, easily obtain the required amount by a penny subscription. Two more "contingent" mombers were foled last night. Trooper Leanhad amost enthusiastic send-off, a large number of his friends meeting him for this purpose at the Havelook Institute, where a very spirited social evening was spent, and Trooper Loan was the recipient of several offerings of esteem. Trooper A. Wallaoe was similarly feted at Wincey's restaurant, and Mr Hewitt, on behalf of the guest's late fellow-employes at Messrs Nolson's, presented him with a handsome silver-mounted pipe. In both inatances the proceedings were of a most patriotic and enthusiastic nature. It h:is been deoided by nearly all the tradesmen of the town that on Saturday next the shops will be kept open as usual, notwithstanding the attractions provided at the racecourse. To-day, Wednesday, is the last day upon which nominations can be received of persons wishing to become members of the Hawke's Bay Licening Committee.
