NAPIER PARK RACING CLUB'S SPRING MEETING,

FIRST DAY. The opening' day of tho Napier Park Rucing Club's bpiing meeting was perfect —au ideal spring day, warm aud sunny, without a clcud in the sky. Postponements of nvco .meetings, they say, arp, as a rule, very unlucky, but the Nnpier Park certainly snffored no ill-luck yesterday It wan a treat to be on the fine grassy lawn, ■which has never presented such a nice appearance, for the rain of Monday had a wonderful effect on tho young grass. Indeed, the whole grounds were in excellent order, and a picture for the eye to meet. There was a very large attendance, including many ladies, who donned their most stylish spring costumes for the occasion, and lent to the scene an air of graco and beauty. The racing throughout the day waa of a very interesting description, and that speculation waa brisk may be judged from the fact that for the eight events ,£GO27 went through the machines, against d£4474 for the same number of races at the last spring meeting. Bullrush, one of Mr Ormond's cast-offs, now a five-year-old, won his first race, and this over ' hurdles, making the Hack Hurdles an easy victory for him by setting the pace with his light weight. The betting was fairly equally divided between Awahuri, Tangahoe, Aquatic, and Bullruah. The majority failed to pick the winner, and this was to be their fate in the next race, the Criterion Stakes, in which Pistol Grip, who likes the Park course, was allowed to pay a dividend of .£l3 17s. It was a good betting race, 11 horses facing Mr Piper, of which Amphion was the select of the public, but he disappointed backers. In the County Hack Handicap a capital race took plncc, another large field of 10 going out. The winner turned up in the consistent. Will-o'-the-Wisp. It is strange how tho public go off winning form. At Hastings the gelding had a first and two seconds to his credit, yet he was allowed to pay £7 9s yesterday. The Park Stakes furnished one of those exciting races for which the Park is noted, A very select field went out, comprising 1C well-bred horses, including five Now Zealand Cup horses. The Cup favorite, Kxplosion, was not scon out at Hastings, and it was deemed that n horse which could occupy a leading position in the Cup betting quotations should justify the confidence of backers by winning the Stakes race. The son of Cuirassier looked very fit, and as he took his preliminary canter down the course backers felt confident that their money was in safs keeping. But he was never in the race. Tauhoi and Jadoo fought out a brilliant finish, which ended in the former's favor by a bare head. The mile and a quarter was covered in 2min 12 l-sth sec, which has only once been beaten in this race, and that was by Castashore last year, whose time was about two seconds less. This race was instituted in 1886, and in that year and the two years following the distance was over a mile and a half, reduced by a quarter of a mile in 1889. The winners in the first three years were Silence, Salisbury, and Recluse. Tirailleur was the first horse to win it over the shorter distance, his time being 2min ISsee. Kotuku was the next, and Eosefeldt, Revolution, Rosefeldt again, Golden Plover, Spindrift, The Shrew, and Cccur de lion all beat Tirailleur's time, though of course the going must be considered, aud yesterday Tauhei'a time must be reckoned as remarkably good, seeing that tho course was a bit holding, and she carried a stone and three pounds more than Castashore, whose time was just a little faster than that of the handsomelooking daughter of Vivandiere. In tho Spring Welter Palaver, The Hompie, and Waterstono came past the jndge's box almost locked together, the former being declared winner by a nose. Torpina maintained the good form Bhown by him at Hastings by annexing the Hurdles very easily, not being pressed at the finish. Whitirea, the favorite, did not run up to anticipations, and finished very badly. Autaia was served up as a very hot favorite for tho Railway Handicap, due to his easy victory at Hastings, but the speedy Amouroux just beat him on the post. '} he concluding race of thn day was won by Sirocco vtvy comfortably. That the handioappor, Mr A. T. Danvern, had done his work excellently, and thoroughly concealed the winners, was proved by tho large dividends paid throughout tho day. Tbe luncheon booth, tinder Mr R. Winsley's satisfactory control, was largely patronised, while Mr Dennehey did big business at the refreshment bars. The following were the results : — HACK HANDICAP HURDLES, Of 60 soys : second horse 10 soys from the stake ; for horses that have never wor a hurdle race exceeding 40 soys ir value at time of nomination; li mile 101 Mr George Hope's b g Bulrush, 6yrs, by Dreadnought — Martyr, 9at 71b (O'Neill) ] 74 Mr J. From a splendid start Jadoo was the first to show out prominently, with Rubin as her nearest attendant, while closely following were Tauhoi, Explosion, Daphne, First Blood, Ideal, Koremataku, Lady Helen, with Bush Rose, the latter improving his position as the horses wont ronnd the town bend. This was the order for another furlong, when Daphne moved into second position to .Tadoo, while Tauhei was closo on her quarters, Rubin next. In iho run to the hill bend Daphne loat her place to Tauhei and Ideal, with Koremataku fast coming through. Jadoo continued to cut out the running into the straight, at which point she was leading the field by fully a couple of lengths, and the Jet d'Eau mare's victory was being loudly hailed, when Tauhei came at the leador, and half-way down the straight on terms with her. Both jockeys made a great effort, Jadoo still maintaining her lead. The grey mare, however, had just a wee bit too much pace, and the last few strides gave her barely a head victory as they flashed past the post, Koremataku finishing third about two lengths away, Ideal fourth, Lady Helen fifth.
