CLOSE POLLING. Beceivod September 3, 4.50 p.m. Brisbane, Sunday. There was great excitement at the Federal polling. The latest returns show —yes 31,354, no 26,896. The Metropolitan division recorded 5600 for and 9944 against, Southern division 12,186 for and 12,060 against, Central division 4662 for and 3417 against, Northern division 9146 for and 1924 against. Eoceived September i, 1,5 a.m. The latest referendum returns are— yes 32,198, no 27,451. The outside incomplete returns will increase the majority. In the Premier's electorate there is a majority of two to one against. The anti-bill leaders addressed a large crowd, and predicted the bill would never pass Parliament, and would lead to the downfall of Mr Dickson's Ministry, and raise a separate question. The Federal leaders addressed an immense gathering, and met with considerable opposition. Subsequently a Federal banquet was held, where speeches were given congratulating the people upon the result. The Federal flag was unfurled amidst much enthusiasm. DIVORCnnYDNEY. SOME INTERESTING FIGURES. Beceived September 3, 4 50 p.m. Sydney, Sunday. The president of the local branch of the Church of England Union, in an address, dealt with the facility for obtaining divorce in the colony. Last year 368 petitions were filed in Sydney; 806 marirages took place at matrimonial agencies. During the same ■ year 2311 illegitimate births were registered, being nearly 7 per cent of the total, while the children born after wedlock within the regular time, after allowing for premature births, amounted to nearly 34 per cent of the total births.
