HASTINGS S.M. .COURT
Thursday, 31st August, 1899. (Before Messrs G. Ellis and C. Hughes, J's.P.) Hohani Kauka was charged by his wife Earoni with an assault afc To Aute on the 19th inst. Me G. Ebbett appeared for the complainant, who deposed that her husband struck her three times on the head with a whip, when ' she became unconscious. Ariha te Nabn corroborated the statement, stating that she witnessed the assault, and took the whip put of the hands of Hohani. Dr. Nairn gave evidence as to the nature of the wound, and that complainant was brought to him for treatment. A similar offence having been proved against the accused he was bound over to keep the peace for six months under surety of £50. ', The Bench warned him that if brought before the Court again on such a charge he would be Bent to gaol. W. Gee (Mr Sainsbury) v. J. Garnett (Mr Scannell), claim .£2O, for : Venetian blinds supplied.' Evidence was taken on commission. The defendant denied having received the blinds. He ordered them after accepting a quotation, but before they arrived a bank draft was presented to him which he refused to sign, as he expected the terms usually allowed, and he had not seen the blinds. He wrote plaintiff to this effect, and in reply received a solicitor's letter .demanding payment. He then referred the matter to his solicitor. Solicitor's fees were allowed and the case was adjourned to ChristChurch.
