THE YAKRA. TRAGEDY.

INQUEST ON THK VICTIM. STATEMENT BY THE INFORMER. DOCTOI! IN A AWKWARD POSITION. Beceivea January 2G, 1.5 u.Bl. Melbourne, Wednesday. At the inquest on Ambrose (the victim of the Yarra tragedy) the evidence called established the fact that an illicit relationship existed between deceased and Todd. The girl Dnbberkfi (who gave information to the police which led to tho identification of the body and the arrest of the principals) supplemented her previous statement by stating that Madamo Kadatyske frequently treated Ambrose with an electric battery to procure a miscarriiigo by that treatment. Tt failed, and tho night before her death she procured a certain herb, and told Ambrose she intended next morning to take stronger measures. Dr. Gage was called in shortly after her death. He said he did not wish his name to be mixed up in the case. He was subsequently informed of the method of the disposal of the body, and expressed the opinion that it would floatThe inquest was adjourned till Monday. Mr 3 Ambrose, the mother of the Yarra victim, resides in Grosvenor Place, South Yarra, and from her surroundings appears to have a hard struggle for a livelihood. The house is a very dingy one. The unfortunate mother is terribly broken down by the sad news of her daughter's end. She states that the girl was wayward and headstrong, and beyond her control. She would have been 18 on the 28fch inst. She last saw her about the end of November. The mother then said: " Where are you going, Mabel ? " and she replied, "To look for a place ; I'll be back soon, mother." But she did not return. Seven months previously she had left home in the same way. When she returned she remained at home a couple of months, and went away again in November to a place where she first met Mr Todd. On Monday week Todd said to Mrs Ambrose, " I have a lovely Christmas card for MabSl." Then he felt in his pocket, and said that it must be in his other pocket. She said, "Mabel is all right," and he replied, " Ye 3, leave Mabel alone ; she knows how to take care of herself." He told her that she was at Madame Olga's. Mrs Ambrose never thought for a moment that anything was wrong with the poor girl. Mrs Ambrose never viewed the head at the morgue, though Constable Ogan asked her to, She said to him, " I would go if I had any suspicion that anything was wrong. I never thought my girl would meet such a terrible'death." Mrs Ambrose is the widow of Alfred Ambrose, a telegraph operator, who came to Melbourne from Sydney about six years ago. He died of fever, leaving his family in destitute circumstances. It appears that after all the name of the girl who gave the information of the boot-box tragedy is Beatrice Jamieson, and that Thekla Kegina Dubberke i& only a name which at inadatne's suggestionshe assumed when engaging some time ago with her as assistant. She states that as the body was being taken through the streets the odour was such that she feared that the box would be stopped.
