HASTINGS.
fFHOII OUR OWN OOBBBSrONDENT.] January 18, 1899. No business was transacted at the Native Land Court yesterday owing tc the absence of the solicitors connected with the cases, and interested natives had to ask for adjournments on this ground. To-day Hori Here and others represented by Mr Seannell, were to havt proceeded with an appeal relative to land 1 at Danevirke, but on the application ol Mr A. L. D. Fracer, who appeared for th( respondents, cousuuted to a dismissal ol the appeal. Thistles are very much in evidence all over the borough, and Mr H. H. Murdocl informs me that he is afraid that the true 1 Colifornian thistle has made its appearance. If this is bo, Mr Murdoch, in hit usual humorous vein, suggests that the i colony may just aa well be handed ovei 1 to the French. The children attending St. Matthew's Sunday-school will shortly hold theii annual picnic on the Jockey Club grounds. Excellents sports programmes for both girls and boys have been pre pared, the judges for the former events 1 being the Misses Williams and V. Tosswill, for the latter Messrs Fraser Martin, Hyde, and Wright. Given fine weather the youngsters should hare a most enjoyable outing.
