THE AUSTRIAN INFLUX.
MORE AUSTRIANS ON THE WAY. AN OPINION. FROM THE ARGUS. CAN WE SHUT THE DOOE IN THEIR FACES? Received January 11, 10.40 p.m. Sydney, Wednesday. The Mokoia has sailed with a contingent of Austrians aboard. Melbourne, Wednesday. The Argus, referring io the Austrian difficulty, says that the colonies are agreed that there can be no uncheoked entry of Asiatics, but are called upon to deal with a different question in 'the matter of tho advantages and disadvantages of an open door to the Continental European. It asks whether we can shut the door in their faces without bringing shame on^ourselves, or whether they are a menace to our civilisation. The best and most deserving colonists in Victoria are the hardy German pioneers of the Wimmera district. It cannot be said that there is no room for these foreigners, eitker in New Zealand or Australia. Such a statement is too preposterous, even for the pretence of poverty, in a riierely pecuniary sense. There should be no bar to the admission of healthy immigrants.
