[by telegraph.] Dunedin, Thursday. At the Chess Congress L. A. Cleland and J. Mouat mot in the fourth round. Jilouat adopted the French dofenco, and Cleland mated ou tho 31st movo, This ! win makes Cleland champion of Now Zealand for 1899. Barnes, of Wellington, defeated Edwards. At the annual meeting of the Congress a motion was carried expressing deepregret at the death of Mr Henry Hookham. Mr Justice Dermiston was elected president, vice-presidents, N. E. Cooke (Christchurch), D. Stenhouse, R. Cleland (Dunedin), Hon. P. 1 Arkwright and Ben- ■ bow (Wellington), J. M'Lenan and A. ■ Millar (Auckland) ; hon. eeoretary, F. • K. Killing (Wellington). It was re- ' solved to hold the next Congress at Wel--5 lington on a date to be decided by the 3 Council. 3
