ASSESSMENT COURT.
Mr A. Tarnball, S.M., presided at an Aseesament Court at Haitloga yesterday to bear about 30 objeotloni to the Governmeat valuation, Mr Campbell, DflpuJy Commissioner, Mr Bunea, supemilng volaer, and Mr Popplewell, Government vainer for the borongh, appeared on behalf of the Government. Moat of tbe valuea were anatatned or altered on departmental oalouUtlons, One oaae,l»ow« ever, of land belonging to Mr John Beatßon, 131 acres la St. George's road, was opposed by Mr Soannell. Tbe capital value was diseased at £4091, unimproved valne £3850, and valne of Improvements £241.— Tbe evidence of Mesers Qnartly, J. Oollloge, Harvey, and Beataon wai taken In support of the objsotion. The valuer wbb cross-examined so some length by Mr Sca&nell, after which Mr Campbell addressed the Court, stating he wai pre« pared to increase the estimate of Ira* piovementa owlog to the omlaslon of the vainer of 10s a chain far drainage, bat supporting (be valnatlon. The Court rednoed the unimproved value to £3780 i and raised the Improvements to £270. The Bank of Mew Zealand objected to the assessment of £600 for tbe property on which the bank premises ate slSnated, bat were prepared to acoept £500 as tbe valne. The Government valuation wai sustained. An objeotion railed by Mr J. Colllnge, on bis own behalf, as to tbe value of 20 core* in blook 6, stated at capital value £854, unimproved value £800, Improvements'£s4, was allowed, the oapltal value being redaoed to £760, unimproved £698, Improvements £54. Meurs Tiokner, Ebbeit, and Cook were heard in support ot the appeal. Two other cases In whioh the valnei were objeoted to by Mr J. Collloge, oa hahe.lf or Mrs Taylor's estate and of Mr John Hlgglm, were adjourned until Friday. Mr Soannell appeared on behalf of tbe Rlverilea syndicate, an arrangement being effected between tbe valners and himself. ' Messrs Sainsbnry, W. J. White, and G. Ebbett appeared on behalf of ollenta and Mr H. Lsioalles to support certain valua* tlocs.
