MEMORANDUM RE TECHNICAL TRAINING OF PUPIL TEACHERS. Mr Hill reported :— In reply to tho Board's memorandum on the above subjaoc I Beg ix> Btate :— 1. There would be a certain amount ot In convenience by tbe withdrawal of pupil teaohers from tho sohools for throe or four weeks during the school sessions, but pupil teaohers are aids aiid not essentials in the management and oontrol of schools. The benefits to the whole district and to each separate school would far outweigh the temporary lnconvonlonco that would arise, as tbe training would be permanent In Its effeote, a, The proposed BUbjeots of Instruction and training are— Teaching and criticism, sohool work, solenoo, binfclng, kindergarten, and ambulance ■work. Theso subjeota would be taken on a definite syllabus of instruction at Bpeolfled times, and according to a timetable that would be drawn to cover the period ol training, just as was done vhen the teaohert wera brought to Napier in 1880. Mr Pope, in» apeotor of native aobooli, has ylilted the place and made a report. It seems that nearly 30 children ot the Maori raoe and of aohool ege live at Ramoto, and abont an equal number at neighboring settlemontf, nnd tbat of these very few attend at the Frasertowa public school. Could you ascertain whether your Board has any design of endeavoring to bring theie children under instruction, or would prefer tbat this Department should deal with them nnder ita native tohool plan,"- It wai stated that dnring the last quarter the attendance at the Fraaertown eohool had decreased by 21, the native children evidently having been withdrawn in view of the proposed erection ot a native school there. The Sohoil Commissioners (Auckland) forwarded £32 7s rent, and (Napier) £500. Mr J. Lomas applied for a lease of 12 acres at Mam Mam, oiTerlng £2 10s. — Ajplloatlons to be Invited. TheEduoatlon Department forwarded •the capitation allowance for April, £2C42 lOi. Mr J. B. Rdd, Patntahl, asked for information as to tbe working of teohntoal education In Hawke't Bay,— Board undertook do apeolfio teohnloal work, and therefore could supply no information on thembjsoS. Mrs Hill reported favorably of the sewing classes conducted by Misa Croaie at the Napier school, and tha Board voted £10 subsidy. Aooonota amounting to £2231 18» 3d were pasted for payment. The Board then adjourned.
