When be could not get it he retorted to ohlorodyne and painkiller, a quantity of which he muet have swallowed , prior to outtiDg his throat, according to *v the hospital medloal testimony. Cantle's , craving lot drink had Its pathetic side. * On Thursday night he entered a Napier hotel and called for whisky. The publican was doubtfal as to the deceased's , Identity, and asked, " Isn't your name Cantlet" "No," said he, "My name'B - John Edwards." The pnblloan. in doubt, handed him the decanter, Cantle filling a tumble almost to the brim, and having consumed tbe liquor, Bald, "I'll pay you for this in the mornIng," then hurried into the street. Early on Saturday morning he was seen sitting on the doorstop of Alexander's in Carlyleatreeb, and asked a passer-by for sixpence. 1 He then looked a picture of abject mlaery, ■ Cantle on Saturday was setved with a summons {or trying to obtain drink whilst a prohibition order was In existence against him, The case was to have come on for hearing at the Magistrate's Court '" to-day.
