NOTES.
Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.R., received a rather rongh handling at one o» Ha eleotlon meetings last week. Aoeording to tho Taranukl News there were 160 eleotore present at the Lepperton meeting, and a vote of no-confidenoo In the Goverument was carried by such a larce nnmber of those present that It was de« olded nob to attempt! to count the hands. ' Three oheere were then given for Mr Brown, the Opposition candidate, and three groans for Mr E. M. Smith and the Seddon MlnUtry, The Timant Herald has a soathlou article on the member for Tlmara (Mr Sail' Janes). After expressing Its regret that snoh a very weak man should be made Minister for Public Works In the Beddon Government, ii says :— "lt would be utterly impoislble for Mr Hall- Jones to stand alone. He simply does what he is directed to do by tho Premier, who did not permit him even to manage the public works buelness In the House, bnt constantly interfered in an unprecedented manner. It would be utterly absurd to suppose that Mr Hall-Jonea baa had any Influence in shaping the polloy of the Government. A position of that sort renders the man who ooouples Id contemptible, and his presenoe in the Ministry is discreditable to him In view of the opinions which, before bis appointment, he openly expressed concerning the Premier." It now appears that Mr Parsons, of Wangannl, will not enter tbe oontest tor the Patea Beat agalneD Mr George Hutohlson, and a oandldnte has been found in the person of Mr Komlngton, a resident or Huntervllie.
