HAWKE'S BAY V. WAIPAWA UNION, A WIN FOR THE FORMEU, (By " Baerackek.") Xbe annual mutch between these two nnionß took place yesterday at Waipawa. In consequence of the heavy rain whloh had fallen on Tuesday nifiht the ground was In a terribly bad condition, and the game was eventually nothing more nor less than a mud Boramble confined chiefly to the forwards. Occasionally the Hawke's Bay baoks got on some passing rushes, which were spoilt by passing forward, the ball being very slippery. The Waipawa forwards proved a Strong lot, played a good game, seeming more at home in the mud than their opponents, who nevertheless played np plaoklly against them. The Jijawke's Bay team played with the wind in the first spell, and had decidedly thp beat of the game. The Hawke's Bay team were awarded several ftee kicks, bnt nothing resulted from them owing to the soddened state of the ball, although one of them wan within easy rango. When half time was lonlleu 2? score had been recorded It was odds on the Wfiipawft team that thsy would score, but they were held in oheck very well by their opponents, Eventually Broad b'aoked up the fields and following

Wilson failed In the attempt to convert the try. After that score the Hawke'a Bay team had innch the best of the game, and should have scored again, but were fr nutrated by thelball being thrown forward. Of the Individual playere, Brock played only moderately, being not bo safe as nsnal. Irvine was the piok of the threequarters, and Taufo played very fairly at half-baok. Grenside, on the wing, gavo tho Hawke'a Bay team a lot of trouble. Spnedy was the tat of tho suruui for. warda. For Haw Ice's Bay Williaina played a grand gnnio at fall, kicking into touch splendidly. Wilson, at centre three-quarter, dlil wluili work fell to him in a uafo luriutior. V. Jago, at liveeighths, was decidedly the boat back on the ground, doing <m immense amount of work and feedlDg hia three- quarters well. Praser was fair at half. \Velsman and Proshaw both played well on the wing and got on to the opposing backs in good | style. P. Kelly, Tankard, and Lang were tho pick of the forwards, Mr I Whittlngton officiated aa referee.
