TIMBER CONFERENCE.
Wellington. Tuesday. At the Timber Confeienoe to-day Mr Mackle. of the Indian Forest Department, attended the committee appointed to conslder the eeleotlon and classification of timbers suitable for building and export purposes. He reported that there 1b bob little timber in the oolony fib for export. Oar forests are nob so extensive as repre» sented, and SO years hence there will be little timber in the oolony, The committee suggested that the Government shoald settle people on open land in preference to foteet soil, which would create some market and stop the wholesale destrnotlon of timber by fire. Several members expressed dissent from the fiißt part of the report, bub It was adopted. The forest committee's report was adopted, recom> mondbp the conservation of forests and Bnbmitting them to sale only as the requirements of trade make it necessary; that forests on lands suitable for settlement should be the firefc disposed of to enable sawmlllera to provide proper plaafe to tarn oat timber Id the best condition ; all restrictions as to area they may held shoald be abolished ; and that sawa flsspers shoald be preferred to hewn, la order to save waste.
