Martin, two youths, J. Taylor and Norman Hamlin, pleaded guilty to receiving stolen goods. Frederick Clifford, for a grossly indecent aot, was sentenced to 18 months' hard . labor. Isabella Davidson, a young girl, pleaded guilty to the theft ot a number of articles of clothing, and her sister, Ada Davidson, pleaded not gnilty. In the latter ease tbe jury did not agree, and bave been locked np for the night. Welunqton, Monday. Selssors has been snatched for all engagements this week. Later. Mr W. Watson, president of the Bank of New Zealand, this afternoon paid the sum of £500, being the amount of the fine Imposed on him by the House on Friday. A letter bas been received from Messrs Rodgers and Galiet, perfumers, of Paris, elating that the substance found on the Taranaki beach some time ago by Messrs C. Beokett and Alnsley, and sent to France is ambergris. Mr Beckett states tbat the weight was abont 481 b, and he jestimatea the value to be at least £3000. On the House meeting to-morrow afterEKsan it will adjourn until 7.30 wben probably tbe debate on tbe Financial Statement will begin. The Timber Conference to-day discussed tbe reports of committees. The forestry committee reported tbat a olose .season for catting timber was impracticable and a system of ringing treeß would fee costly and injurious. The export committee's report laid speoial stress on the necessity of seasoning timber before sale. Both were adopted. Nelson, Monday. The seoond annual meeting of tbe Nelson School of Mnsio was held tosight when the report and balance-sheet <weie adopted. The pupils have increased aoe&lderabry, and the school is financially -sound. The work of the present principal, Herr Handke.was highly spoken of. The •work of the other teacher "was also very favorably referred to. The nnmber of lessons given per week last year did not ezoeed SO but the number Ib now 75. Tbe trustees expressed conviction that the sohool was now a permanent success, Dunedin, Monday. At a meeting of shareholders ln the Transvaal special claim, Reefton, It was deolded to place tbe property under offer to Mr Wilis, at present in London. The .terms are that the present shareholders receive £1506 cash and a considerable number of paid-up shares in the new oompany. - Tbe option is for four montbs. At the annual meeting of the Dunedin Gold Dredging Company the report stated that the river had kept high dnrlng the year, interfering with operations. Gold to the valne of £2951 had been got, of which £435 had been paid in dividends, and £1062 as wages. Thirteen entiles (one more than last year) bave been received for tbe sixth annual brass band contest, to be held in Banedin In October next.
