THE NEW TELEGRAPHIC RATES.
Wellington, Sunday. In connection with the reduced charges for telegtame within the colony, returns from 46 of the principal telegraph offices for the period Ist to 6th Jane Inclusive, as compared with the period Ist to 7bh May (exclusive of Sunday), show an increase of 1753 per oenb in the number of ordinary telegrams, and 49 52 per cent urgent ordinary telegrams forwarded. The value of ordinary telegrams decreased 046 per cent, whilst that of urgent ordinary telegrams Increased 15 52 percent. The average valufl of ordinary telegrams, which included delayed telegrams bb well, for the period from Ist to 7th May was Is o'22d, and that of urgent ordinary telegrams 29 6'o9d for the June period. The ordinary telegrams averaged 10'3Sd, and the urgent ordinary telegromß Is o'33d. The total revenue derived from hoth codes shown an Increase of 107 per cent. The totals for each period are as follows : — From Ist to 7th May— ordinary telegrams 21,563, value £1097 17s 2d; nrgent ordinary telegramo 931, value £116 12s 4rJ. From Ist) to 6th Jnne— ordinary .telegrams 25,844, valne £1092 10s 4d ; nrgent ordinary telegrams 1392, value £134 lla 6d. Auckland shows an increase of 31*33 par cent in the number of ordinary telegrams forwarded, and 160 per cent In the urgent ordinary telegrams ; Christchurch Increased 2219 per cent for ordinary telegramß and 21-52 for urgenta ; Onnedin increased 3'S2 per cent for ordinary and SO 36 for urgantß ; Wellington increased 1450 per cent for ordinary but urgent 3 decreased IBs per cent. The abnormal increase in Auckland la attri* buted to the large shaTebroklng business transacted by telegraph.
