SIR GEORGE GREY. 8 Mr Seddou moved, "That this Honee 0 desires on the retirement of Sir Georuo B Grey from bis seat in Parliament as mem--3 ber for Auckland, to place on record its J high sense and appreciation of the great services rendered by him to New Zealand 3 as Governor, in obtaining for it a free 1 constitution, and conducting its affairs ' in times of great difficulty, and as ' a member of the House in pro--1 moling and passing beneficent) legislation, and displaying the deepest interest • in everything that concerned the welfare ' of the colony, and that this Honee trusts > that he may long be spared to enjoy the ' repose which he has justly earned by his 1 services to his country." Mr Seddon acid ' he thought history would place Sir George ! Grey in the foremost place of anyone in ' the colony. He referred at considerable length to the grtat services Sir George Grey had rendered the colony. Captain Russell, in seconding the motion, added his eulogium to the tribute of admiration for Sir George Grey expressed by the Pramier. If Sir George Grey returned to the colony he thought it would be a singularly graceful act to offer him a seat in the other branch of the Legislature. Messrs Hone Heke, Mills, W. Hutchieon, Saunders, Carroll, Crowther, and Robert Stout warmly eupported the motion, which was carried on the voices. ORDER OF BUSINESS, It was decided that for the rest of the session Government business take precedence on Wednesdays. Mr Seddon said the Government wonld proceed with (he tariff immediately the Colonial Treasurer returned from the South on Tuesday next. They would go on with the liquor bill as soon as possible. ARBITRATION BILL. Mr Reeves moved the committal of the Indnstrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act Amendment Bill, to provide that the minimum nnmber of persons to enable an industrial union of employers to be registered be five. Its chief provisions were to enable employers to come under the Aob to the same extent aa employed. The debate was interrupted by the 5.30 adjournment. EVENING SITTING. The House resumed at 7 30 ARBITRATION BILL. The Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act Amendment Bill was committed. Clause 5 was altered to provide that an indnstrial dispute mus-fc be referred to the Board within hx weeks instead of three months, as at firot proposed. SALE OF GOODS BILL. The S lie of Goods Bill passed through committee without amendment. CORRUPT PRACTICE BILL. The Corrupt Practices Prevention Act Amendment) Bill was committed. Clause 3, " jNo payment for election expenses to be made except by Citididates," evoked a long dlssussion. A motion by Mr Hogg that progress on the bill be reported wuh lost by 36 to 24. With the object of killing the bill Mr Pirani moved that the Chairman leave the chuir, bnt af'er a long discussion this ! was rejected by 33 to 24. — Captain Rnßsell j moved an amendment to the clause | to the effect that no money for elections '■ ahall be- provided by any person other than the candidate. — Amendment lost by 32 to 22. Clanse 6, which provided that an election shonld nob be void if payment was made without the sanction of the candidate, was struck ont. In clause 14 the limiti of election expenses was fixed at £200, inclusive of advertising and rent ot rooms for public meetings. Progress was then reported on the hill and the bill put through its final stages. BILLS, The Sile of Goods Bill and the Unclaimed Moneys Bill were put through their final stages. A motion by Major Steward that the House shonld adjourn till Tnesday was lost on the voicfef. The House rose at 1.15.
