WRECK OF A SCHOONER.

Gisborne, Wednesday,

A heavy gale has raged daring the last &4 hoars, ralslDg a bigh sea in the bay. Baring the night the schooners Awanai and the Spray arrived from SVestport and Meicnry Bay respectively. The Awanai was able to make tbe river, bat the Spray got into a dangerous position near the beach, and in the afternoon drifted Into the surf. The waves broke clean ovnr her, and the rescue of the crew was very exciting. An attempt was made by those on the vessel to float a line ashore, bnt it failed, owing to the stroDg drawback. Then a young man named Frederick Loundes bravely swam through to the vessel, carrying a line. This was received bat the crew did not venture to come throngh the saif by means of it. Fearing for the captain, who is an old man and feeble, they launched a boat) and tbe captain and one sailor got into it and were safely hauled ashore. The boat then put oat with three shore handstand seenred the remaining two sailors, bat in returning Oapelßed. The cook of tbe Spray becoming entangled in the line was rolled under the boat several times, and only rescned with great difficulty, being brought ashore insensible. The schooner lies snag enough, and It) ia expected she will be got oft safely. Both vessel and cargo were uninsured, . She Is locally owned.
