He is the actual leader of the Opposition, but his views are moderate and ot a modern type, as he fully recognises thab the old order has passed away, and the conditions of the hour must be met. Captain Russell is a staunch man in every sense, and one of those to whom the country looks to help it out of the' present state of disorder. We have good grounds for saying thab the leader of the Opposition will not only be welcomed by his own party. He has earned the goodwill and confidence of the Labor representatives, and though they may themselves be very much under the thumb of the Government their numerous friends in the country are not. It is quite understood I that there is a split iu the labor ranks in Dunedin between those who obey the i dictates of Mr Seddon and those who decline to desert Mr Eirnshaw at bis bidding. The mofe independent of these seotions will undoubtedly welcome Captain Russell. Bat, apart from this split, he will receive a sound welcome ior two reasons. Firstly, because he has in various ways shown himself a genuine friend of the working classes, and, secondly, because in Dunedin an honest politician always meets wibh a good reception whether his views are acceptable or nob.
