Th 6 Premier's recent statement) anent the duties of the Agent-General haviDg been regarded in London as to imply tbe retirement of Sir Sanl Samnel, Mr Reid explains that he did not wißh to infer that the present Agenfj-General would be ■npeneded at an early date, bnt what be meant was tbat in the natural coarse of events Sir Sanl Samuel must soon retire, being an old man, and one who would shortly be entitled to a.pension. In tbe first innings against Broken Hill the Englishmen scored 178 ; M'Laren 66 and Stoddart 66. In their second essay Broken Hill knocked np 102, leaving the visitors victorious by an innings and eight rang. Iredale denies that he haß received an offer to proceed to England. The Hanroto has on board 31 " New Australians" who proeeei by the steamer Bim'ntaka from Wellington en route for the settlement in South America. A tragedy li reported from Adamstown, near Newcastle. A girl named Eleanor Turner, aged 12, the adopted daughter of Mrs Gray, while washing dishes broke a cap. Mrs Gray upbraided the elrl for carelessness, wherenpon the latter gave a ■auoy reply. Mrs Gray, In a fit of anger, seized a large table knife which she hnrled at the girl. The knife struck the girl in the region of the heart, killing her. Mrs Gray has been arrested. (Received January 21, 12.30 a.m.) Threa youths went rowing to-day in a boat at Narrabsen, near Manly, and eventually, as the boat was gradually drifting seaward, jumped overboard. Two of the occupants, Baldock and Farkes (grandson of Sir Henry Farkes) were drowned ; the third youth was landed in a etitloal condition.
