HASTINGS.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

November 28, 1893.

Since 9 o'clock this morning there has been a steady influx of electors to the town, and polling has gone steadily on throughout the day. Although very keen interest is evidently felt, the election has been conducted in an eminently respectable manner, very little excitement having been manifested duriuc the morning. As the day wore on, large groups of spectators congregated within the viciaity of the Court-house, the occupants of each conveyance being closely scrutinised, and the probable destination of their vote eagerly discussed. Every description of conveyance bai beeu brought into requisition, from the hnmble dogcart to the more pretentious drag, the leading feature of the vehicular display being a four-in-hand brake horsed with four greys, the ribboßS being splendidly handled by Mrs Ernest Tanner, At frequent intervals hearty cheering greeted ber as she appenred with a fresh relay ot sapporters for the cause, especially when within five minutes of the closing of the poll abe drove up with a surprise party ot about a dozen who had not recorded. Ciptain Russell's committee have been working indefatigably, especially the ladies' committee, headed by the Misses Rusfell, no efforts being spared to britg up to the pall the stragglers who from one cause or another tailed to appear within a measurable time of the dosing, Owing to the number of voters who have come in from the country dlßtiicts it has been impossible for the committees to form any idea as to the result, Waimarama, Te Apitl, Ashley^Clioton, and other places at considerable distance having furnished their additions to the Hastings list,

Great interest is being taken as to the probable result cf the Napier eleotion, and enquiries for information as to the progress dnriDg thn dav have been frequent at the Herald office.
