AN EXPOSURE.
I At the meeting in the The .tr. Royal this evening Mr P. S. M'Lean will thoroughly expose the unreliability of the Government's assertions with respect to finanoe generally, and io particular he will tear to tatters the fllm.y veil ol pretence which has been used with a vie* to conceal the financial recklessness of Mr Ward and his colleagues. And in doing this Mr M'Lean will not rest upon assertion or hypothesis, but will quote from returns and Parliamentary papers issued by the Government themselves, and prove from them how utterly unworthy of credence any statements made by them are. He will devote special attention to that £500,000 conversion operation, referred to in another article, by which an enormous liability has been incurred in order that £163.000 accumulated sinking fund might be secretly borrowed. Mr M'Lean desired to allow Mr Ward the courtesy of putting hi. view of the case on the same platform to the same hearer.*., but thoae who bave tried to get for Mr Ward the opportunity to misrepresent on the night before the election, so that no reply could be m_de, refused to hear of any arrangement. C .nsequently there was nothing for it but to hold a meeting in the Theatre Royal and deal with the questions which Mr Ward ia going to try to defend. And as bis speeoh in which be has before mado thia attempt bas bpen circulated all over tho distrlcti Mr M'Lean will have to haud the unreliable figures which need correction. Mr Swan and Mr E. H. Williams will also addrfss the meetiog, and in addition an address will be given explanatory of ballot voting, designed principally for tbe ladies. The dress circle will be reserved for ladies and their escorts.
