NEW SOUTH WALES.
Sydney, Saturday. The Sydney Daily Telegraph, commenting,on the echeme of the New Zealand Government for advancing money to settlers, says tbat on paper it looks all right and it would be an excellent thing if
working producers conld obtain money
at the lowest possible interest, and it can hardly be doubted tbat with tbe Government as the financial agent and guarantor yw this oan be done. Nevertheless, tbe ""X scheme Is surrounded wltb perils, and presents practically some possibilities oi maladministration, bs did tbe Cednla system, which resulted in wholesale disaster in the. Argentine Republic. Tbe artiole goes on to say tbat New Zealand bas done excellent legislative work and p.oppered accordingly, but to venture on a scheme of thia kind is attempting too much, and perhaps some consciousness of tbis induced the late Mr Ballance to withhold the scheme from publicity. The experiment of sending mandarins, oranges, and lemons lo London packed in tl-tree bark has resulted successfully. A very small percentage of the frnit was damaged.
Tbe Port Jackson Steam Coal Company have applied to tho Mines Department for authority to mine on reserves at South Head and about 8000 aotea of ocean bed. Tlie scheme projected provides fo** putting down a colliery at Watson's Bay to work tbe coal shown to exist by tbe Creroorne bore.
