MR SUTTON RETIRES
Mr Sutton has decided to retire from the contest for the Napior seat. In this he ls wise. The electors generally have all along felt tbat the triangular fight in progress was ttdnently unsatisfactory, and that It wcrjd be muoh better if Mr Swan and Mr Carnell were left to make the appeal on woll-delioed issues. Mr Sutton has recognised thai desire on the part of the electors, and has announced that he is no longer a candidate. It is necessary to explain that ln the eyes of the law be r's a candidate, ln spite of his retirement, beoauße the Act provides that any candidate to officially withdraw f'om any election contest mu_t give notice of his intention five clear days before the pilllDg day, Mr Sutton haviDg failed to do that has forfeited his £10 deposit, and bis name will probably be on the ballot papers. Rut he wishes to make it perfeotly clear that he bopes nobody in the electorate will vote for him, and that he de.lrea to let the contest to-morrow be a fair one between Mr Swan and Mr Carnell, Mr Sutton's formal announcement of his retirement will be found In onr advertising columns.
