Melbourne. Tuesday. The Mercantile Bank cases were continned to-day. Sir Matthew Davles, Mr Milledge, and Mr Muntz completed their statements. The latter declared that he was included in the prosecution in order that what might look like the persecution of Sir Matthew Davles and Mr Milledge might look like a crosecntion. Sir Matthew Davles asoei ted that up to the last he felt assured that the balancesheet of the bink was accurate. Mr Cox, the informant in the present prosecution, will bs put in the box to-morrow, The Age devotes a leader to the proposal of the Premier of Mew Zealand to aavance money to assist) land settlements, la doing so it points to the similarity between the Argentine Republic and New Zealand, and states that unless the Government introduce safeguards against the speculative ris9 in land wbich may be' looked for, the scheme Is fraught with daDgor, but if the difficulties can be guarded against then it considers that a g<eat advance has been made in the solution of the problem of settling people on the land with little capital.
