According to one of our school inspectors (aays the Argus) there is much room for improvement in the standard of historical knowledge attained by scholars, At the last) examination for scholarship j the marks obtained in history were lower than those gained in any other object, niul the answers given to some of the easier questions showed that the candidates' knowledge of historical matters was very hazy. One of the questions was. " What i was the Habeas Corpus Act? " and among others the following answers were given : — "A party ot three were not allowed to be together after the Habeas Corpus Act was read," "An act which gave people the right of attending any chnrch they likeet. " When a body is hanged yon have the body— Latin, corpus, the body; Jutbeas, you have." "An act passed to prevent persons loitering in the street, and if they did not move on when the policeman told them they were to be sent to prison." Another question was to test their knowledge of the Star Chamber, and the following answers were given:— "Star Chamber Is the sky." "Star Chamber is the coronation chair on which the Scottish kings were crowned," "A chamber shaped like a star ia which men were tortured." "Star Chamber consisted of a number of soldlera with Cromwell at their head. It waa formed to try Henry III." The All Nations Bazaar, for which the congregation of fet, Mary'a have been preparing for some, considerable time past, is to open in the Gaiety Theatre on Tuesday, the 25th inst.
