HAWKE'S BAY COUNTY COUNCIL.

Monday, March 13. Present — Messrs W. Shrlmpton (chairman), J. N. Williams, E. D. D. M'Lean, J. Bennett, G. Kymer, and C. Villers. The Chairman notified the return of Mr J. N. Williams for the Heretaunga riding, and ccmgrafcnlated the Conncil on again securing the services of snch an able member. —Mr Williams briefly acknowledged the compliment, and said he hoped to do as well in the future as in the past. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and dealt with :— • From Mr J. M'Ewen, demanding that bis deposit on a metal contract shonld be feeld in favor of his wife. Mr T. Sidey, who bad an order for tha deposit, guaranteed the Conncil against losa through him.— Agreed to. From Sergeant PiekeriDg, resigning the appointment of registrar of dogs for the Heretauuga riding.— Constable Gordon ■was appointed his processor. From the Hereto nnga Road Board, offering to strike nn rate if the Conncil would pay half the Government subsidy, £250.— Mr Williams said the letter did not express what the Road Board wished. The Conncil bad received full snbsidy for two years, and the Board asked for half that amount, or one year's full snbsidy, £600. He tabled a motion to that effect, saying that the Road Board had important functions to perform, and even if £500 were paid it wonld soon have to strike a rate,— Mr M'Lean seconded.— Mr Bennett) expressed a hope that the three remaining Road Boards wonld merge 1b the Conncil.— Mr Villers moved, and Mr Rymer seconded, that the matter be held over for a month.— Mr Williams folnted oat that if the Board struck a alf penny rate the Council's subsidy would be only £125. — The Chairman pointed out that no provision was made In the Council's estimates of expenditure far the return of subsidies to the Road Boards. — Mr Bennett suggested that the Council should pay £250 this year and £250 next —Mr Williams said he would "~ ---a6C&pi**9lPP r omise. From Mr C. D. Kennedy, Connty Engineer, reporting that it would be quite safe to metal the Ngarnroro bridge. From Mr J. Midgley, wklng the Council to clean ont the drain next his property at Clive. — Left in the hands -of the Chairman, From the secretary to the Charitable Aid Board, asking for payment of £29 15s lid on account of the hospital and £198 235, charitable aid.— Passed for payment, overseer's bepokt. The road overseer reported as follows t— Napler-CHve road.- Widening a portion of this road with limestone nibble between the Awatoto and Waltangl railway crossings Is completed, and widening between the Sham* look and Napier is commenced as authorised. Park-road, Greenmpodows —Formation and raisin: about ten chains of this road is complated, Patea-rcud.— West's metalling contract between Koninl and Waikonlnl is comrleted. Rtalngton-Waipuna road,— Metalllncc two miles of this road, between Blssington and pataba, has made good progress during the month.
