WAIPAWA.
(MOM OUB OWN COHKESPONDENT.) March 10, 1593. The Dacheas of Buckingham visited Waipawa yesterday, accompanied by Mrs Montgomery, of Wobum, staying at) the Empire. The ladies took sketches of two Maori portraits (one being "Martha," hanging in the hall) and later accompanied by Mra Scrimgeour paid a visit to the noted chief Eenare Matua. Alas ! the poetry of the thing was sadly marred, for the ladies found Mrs Henare bnsy at the wash-tab 1 Mr John Adams received a communication only yesterday that his tender had been accepted for alterations and repairs of the Court-house, although " your Own " notified you of the fact about a fortnight ago. In yesterday's letter I mentioned the case of two youths (?ealt with at Court by Messrs Inglis and Todd, Justices, bnb it appears that there were five, viz., Albert, Henry, and Edward Loys, David Howse, and James Dickinson. These young fellows raced fnriously afc Ashley Clinton on the. Sunday night, first up and then down the toad, to the injury of certain children upset, and the peace and comfort of the people generally while returning from ohurcti, They pleaded guilty, and were fined Is and 25s costs each, besides losing a day's work, The cash was paid. Inspector Quartly in his final report says; — The rabbits are now well under control in the northern district, and if the same energetic measures now being pnraned are continued the pest will be £6111 iartber rednced. On several of the tubs there are still isolated traces to be found, and these are for the most part being carefully watched by those interested." He bad, be said, recently inspected the northern portion of Gwavas tun bub fonnd no traces, and the rabbiter employed stated that he had seen so raborts for some months ; lying as this part of Gwavas does in the vicinity of the Wakarara and Ruahine ranges? there was every reason to be satisfied with the resttltSjjvhich fnlly justified the expenditure/Tie wished to acknowledge the kindness, consideration, and assistance he had received while in discharge of bis dntiea as inspector from the, proprietors and managers of the several properties. When he took charge of the district he found rabbits on nearly every ran in pretty large patches, but these have been to a great extent eradicated. His diary for last month shows that he saw one rabbit on the Willow open at Kerera only, and signs on Ngarnroro river bed from Fernhillto Ormond's.
Inspector Amyes' report is very satisfactory. Daring the month he visited the extreme north of the new district, but saw no rabbits anywhere. While goin? along the Kiwi range to Tanpo new road he found a dead stoat. On Glenganle and Eskmount properties he found fresh indications on each; he also found fresh traces on the sonth side of the new Taupo road near Messrs Nelson's boundary. I hear that the departure for Home of Mr and Mrs Montgomery has been indefinitely postponed.
