CYCLING NOTES.

(By "Cushion.")

Tho handicaps for the various events of tbe Bicycle Clnb, to be held on January 2i d, ' are now ont, and- the usnal gram, bling has taken, place by those who consider themselves badly treated. Whether the starts are good or bad, 1 know that Messrs Ashton and Starkey took an immense amount of pains over them, and if they have erred, 'have done so in their anxiety to do well, lam afraid Stubbs and Swan have both been dealt with too harshly. The former has never ridden in a race yet, and tbe latter, though he has done good work, has not done well enough to qualify him for holding the post of honor. The two be&t treated men are Howard and Bogle, and that Swan can give them 190 arid 170 yards in five miles I doubt very ranch. Dalton is fairly treated in the mile aud. (me mile and a half races, but bo certainly can't give Howard 20 yards in five miles, I fancy that right _ tbroagh the limit men have nob sufficient Rtart. However, as we say in France, norn vcrrons.

The number of members now training on the track is increasing daily, and some really good work has been clone. Dalton was credited with 3'lo to tbe mile on Thursday. Swan has eased off a bit, not feeling well. Stnbbs also was off for a few days, but is going well again. Hare shows more improvement than any of the riders, and will be about amongst the leaders when the tape is crossed. Bogle never appears to be workine, bnt he travels all tho same, and he is in good form now. Tom Morrison is snro to rido a good race, 110 is workiug consistently and well. J, Morrison has just imported from Oates' a new cushion-tyred safety, and he seems to liko his mount, and travels well. Howard, a new man, is going well, and with some good bard riding up to the date of meet, ing, will make some of our boys travel. Norris has the first cashion-tyred ordinary in Napier. Ho had a nasty spill on Monday last when going well, and damaged his machine badly. Cleeve has (stated to train, and seems to get quickly into form. He has not the best of styles but may improve. Cowell, Jacobi, A. WfJJiams, lew, nml Patterson are doiog ft little work, whilst Strawbridgo is trying bis best to get into form, and is doing fairly well.

The programme of the athletic nnd bicycling champion meetirg are out. It Is to bo held iv Christchurch on February sth and 6th. There will he four bicycle events each day, from ono mile to 25 miles. For the first lime there are four of the races devoted lo safeties and fonr to ordinaries.
