NAPIER HIGH SCHOOLS.

j Tho distribution of prif.es at the Napier High Schools took place yesterday in tho tj ( girls' «)iool. There was a fair attendance ,}[ of parents and fiiends of the pupils. Mr a, J. W. Carlile occupied the chair, and Cc briefly referred to the object of the fj ( gathering. Ho then called upon the Rev. [, ( D. SWey to read MUs Howitt'a report on gj. tho girls' tchool for the year. j>, Tliorepoit, niter giving tcbool details, q\ went on to refer to the satisfactory nature of Dr. M'Arthnr's report, nnd jj ( concluded as follows :— " lam glad that p, I have no changes to chronicle. Speaking \y for myself and my teachers I have only to (;, say we will bear in mind tho comments ]{, and suggestions of the examiner, and 2 endeavor to do good work in the future. i, 0 My girln will also, I trust, acquit Ai themselves well. They have a timid 2 dread of over-work— a riak, I may an«ure nD them, they do not run— aud the idle m scholar is not tho ram avis v/o might p, expect. Bat on tho whole they are fairly diliuent." Sr Mr Wood read bla report npon the p ( boyß* school. Work had progrefised (gi regularly, and good order and discipline 80 bnd been maintsincd. Referring to Dr. (g M'Arthar's report, Mr Wood said it waß 1 the more valuable because it provided means for a comparison between the work of 1891 and the work of the two previous years. Dr. M'Arthur's examinalion had been thorough nnd painstaking, ami it wan eatUlactnry to note that the boys were placed by Dr. M 'Arthur in 'q almost the Bamo order of merit as that r resulting from the schools' periodical ( , examinations. Boys leaving the school (1 ' to go to other schools during the year j,had taken good places, In some instances /. being placed higher than tn the Napier . High School, The report expressed re- . gret that more odvantage was not taken j; of the facilitiea for technical inntniclion afforded by I lie school, and concluded by * an expression of thanks to the teaching j, Btaff, the Governors of the school, &>:. y Mr Wood then read the following report upon the school by Dr. M'Arthur, / M.A., LL.D., of Queen's College, Anckland :— ij I havo the honor to rooort as follows on the r atalooitho Napier }l\A Uchoole, na judged , by Uio nnnwers iont In by tho scliularß to Iho < various sets of questions drawn up by mo. \ Latin.— ln Latin, in tho Klrla 1 school tho , anßWoru sont In by division 11. woro v«ry wnll . done, while thoeo of (llvibton 111. wero hurdly 4 up to tho standard of Iho nyllabu». Division ( iv. wero evidently too young to commit tholr v Latin to paper. Tho eubjoot was well dono < throughout Iho boys' eohool, as will bo scon \ by roorllcg my romarks on each date. > Bnglieh.-Tho Koglish papers dODO by tho ' able. lathe lowor classes. whllo tho foinml ' gmmmar is (rood, in many inßtanoes tho criii- ' clems of Bent onces and composition arc hardly np to tho requirements of tho syllabus. I BcKliah Literature,— Tho special work not . in lh& gubjeot has boen well proparcd by all > classrs. As a mlo, however, tho unswnra wero too brief, and tho p&raphraslni; of most 1 of the candidates requires Kreal Improvo- ' mnnt. ! History.- The upper olaeßtß h»vo dono this subject vory well lndeod, but the lowest class in each sohool found the qucßtloiiß tco 1 much for them altogether. 5 geography. — ThU subject is very wenlc . throughout tho wholoof tho girls' school- In faot, It appoars bb if Uiro had not boon ' nearly enough tlmo spent on ii. The map B drawing la very poor, an, except in ono or two oases, there appears to bo no idea of shape, relatlyo el/.'j, or posit ion.- In tho boyß' school, Iho papors of olaesos v. and ivjl aro vory woli ', done, but tlioao of claeßOß ivii, aro very weak. 8 Algebra.- In this aubjcot there has boon very good work done by tho teachors In both " Boboolß. The highest paper not by mo was >t not easy, and was very well dono. Tho lowest olasß Goem hardly to hive grasped tho mannor in which to do an algebra pspor. Kuolid. — Exoollont work in the highest clnsscs, but the papor set for boys In in. H was evidently beyond their knowledge, or thoy hod not been used to writing out their worft. ft Trigonometry.— ln this subject: the papers ie done by Kerr, M'Kro, and VVilklc aro very 1Q good, . Arithmotlc— This subject la very satisfaol' tory in both schools, tho lowest classes of perhaps being woak In theh' method of c . working. j General— I havo written out the preceding , roport, In the ordor of tJio syllabnß supplied to >K m o ; nnd there is little to bo added, as my ->y collective opinion oan bo gathered from the 1,0 remarks in oacb subject, I consider tliat tho Bcbnols aro well and onrofully taught : and as lhat the highest olasßoa in caoh givo uvldcnco to not only of care and ability on tho part of tho ,»1 teachers, but also of li.dustrycn tho part of _"., the scholars. In the loweet claßees, In Bomo " BtibJEots thero appears to bo an anxioty to get ' r i tho scholars through 1 00 much work, which has y, boon phown In tholr iaablllty to nx_prona thorn eolvcß In writing. In conclusion I may state that, in my opinion, tho Govomora of tho De Napier High Schools aro boing well sorved by ;es the preeont staff of teachers, ck Mr Carlile presented tho prizes, In si- addressing tbegathering, he said he would >n. uot delay them by many remark? from he what) they do donbt regarded as the most nd important part of (ho business, namely, on that their young friends btoald receive ica their well-earned prizes and gat away for He ihsir holidays. He had to cwfesß tbat ill, although he had been a Govu.ior of the ion High School a good many yi'ir.-, he had ng not presentod himself so often at tbo He school ac he would havo dove if ho had he had more lime. He was very pleaaed at ler the excellent) manner in which the pupils

were being educated at the sohool, and also at the satisfactory nature of the reports they had heard read. He had himself looked through somo of the papers, and had seen tho marks awarded by the examine!*. In some cases those results were particularly gratifying. In algebra, for instance, one boy had got full marks, and another 97 out of a possible 100, for a paper which was described by the examiner himself as not iin ensy one. Ho (Mr Carlile) also observed that the average of marks was not made up of good results by n few scholars and indifferent results by the others, but was a good average all thraueh, He concluded by wishing them all tho Compliments of the Beasou.
