DEATH OF THE REV. JOSHUA PARKINSON. We regret the necessity of announcing In our'obitunry column this morning the death of the Rev. Joshua Parkinson, who passed away at 5,45 o'clock yesterday afternoon, after a painful illness of some six months duration, during the last six weeks of which he was conlined to his bed. The deceased gentleman was widely .known, and as widely respected, his sterling qualities ranking him a favorite with all with whom he came into contact. The cause of his illness, and ultimately of his denth, was heart disease. Shortly after his last illness commenced his friends in Napier sent him to Australia for a trip, <n the hope that bis health would be restored. He derived great benefit) from the voyage, hut was attacked by Influenza after his return to Napier, and tbis brought him so low that he never recovered strength. The deceased arrived in Napier /torn England In 1882, and tor some time tendered valuableassistance aa a Church worker In tn«> parish of St. John the Evangelist. In 1888 he was appointed lay reader, with a epecial view to Church work in St. Angaa. tine's district. In the following year he was ordained bb deicon, having previously entered for, and passed with credit, the first grade examination under the Board of Theological Studies of New Zealand. In the two following years he passed) also most) creditably, the second and third grade examinations, and was admitted to the priesthood. The final, or fourth grade examination, was passed in ISS6, when he was 46 .years of age. The examinations alluded to cover a wide area of reading, and it Is a sign of Mr Parkinson's determination and energy that be encountered the difficulties of this prolonged course of study at his age, together with the ordinary work of a parochial clergyman, After great suffering, borne with exemplary patience, he died "Like a child that had gone to sleep." The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon. The deceased gentleman was chaplain to tho Naval Artillery, and wo are given to understand that tho members of the corps will attend the funeral in a body, as a mark of respect. THE CUP OF KINDNESS In a resent issue of the Dunedin Star we gave tho resulb ef a very exhaustive Chemical Analysis to which Messrs Buchanan and Co.'s House of Commons Whisky was subjected by thp celebrated Analyisb to the Inland Revenue Department, Dr. Dell. Wo are pleased to bo able to state that this analysis was of ouch a satisfactory nature that the firm received tho official appointment to supply Scotch Whisky to tho House of Commons — an honor, liy (fie w*yv much coveted and strennously competed for by the Pro> prictore of other Brands— but

Tls not in mortals to command succees, at least success ot this tmturc, especially when they have to Jo with a good levelheaded man of scienco mich as Dr. Bell, who decided in favor of or ngainst the numerous brands submitted to him purely on their merits ; and as Buchanan s Whisky proved itself to bo absolutely pure, well-mellowed, ripe, and delicately flavored, it so completely put the other whiskies "In the shade " that thoy were compelled to take a " back seat." It Is, therefore, now proved beyond tbe shadow of a doubt that tho " House of Commons Whisky " does not contain any deletorions or unwholesome ingredients, It being blended from tho purest and finest Highland and Lowlaud Malt Whiskies. A writer in tho English Sportsman, writing of this whisky, adds : "If overy licensed victualler would sell snch whisky as this there wonld be fewer headaches and perhaps less drunkenness." Colonists would do well to make a careful note of this. We cannot speak too Btrougly of the importance of all lovers of good spirits insisting on eliminating 'rom "our" midst all tbosfl notorionsly injurious fmel oil substitutes for whisky, which are stocked solely because they are "cheap," and which oro the fruitful caueo ef so many "bad heads," by ((euiMutiaj; James Bualiaaan and Co.'g Whisky, as supplied to tfao House of Commons.
