Thursday, August S. The House met at 2.30 p.m. THE CASE OF SPALDING,
The Petitions Committee brought up a report in the case of Spalding (who E rayed for release from tho 'Auckland unatic Asylum) recommending that he should be examined by two independent medical men.
A lengthy discussion ensued. Eventually Mr Hislop expressed his willingness to have the man further examined, and
the report was ordered to lie on the Sable. . '
THE CASE OF CHEMIS.
Replying to Mr Hutchison, the Premier said there was ' no precedent for making public the affidavits and other documents in the case of Louis Cuemis.
Mr Hutchison moved the adjournment of the House and was proceeding to discuss the proceedings at GovornmentHouse, especially referring to the argument of counsel before the Governor on behalf of 'the condemned man as being irregular, when
Sir Harry Atkinson raised a point of order that the acts of tbo Governor could not be dinrassed by the House.
The Speaker, ruled that the Govern* , exercised the prerogative of raeroy independently of the Executive Council, and that the exercise of that prerogative could ndfc bs discussed by the House.
