(PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION,) Wellington, Sunday. A man named Charles Hibbend, formerly a wood and coal dealer in , Tinakori-road, was found dead in a paddock at Wadcstown yesterday afternoon. A portion of a packet of " rough-on-rats " was lying beside Mm, and a revolver was bandy. Ib is a clear case of suicide, apparently from a dose of "rough-on, rats." The Executive Council met yesterday to consider Cheinis's case, but adjourned until Tuesday without arriving at a decision. Gkeymouth, Saturday. Geprge M'WilHam was this moraine committed for trial at Hokitika. Bail was allowed and- forthcoming. On another charge he was remanded till Saturday next. The Ahaura section of the Midland railway has been all sub-let. About 130 men are on the ground. Chbistchurch, Snnday. The bad state of the ground yesterday prevented the trial football match being played for the selection of the team to play against Hawke's Bay. The trial match will take place on Tuesday, after which the selection will be made. Timaku, Saturday. The Tiinam tannery was yesterday taken over by a joint stock company, with a capital of £5000, £3700 of which . has already been subscribed. Oaharu, Saturday. An inquest was held here this morning on the body ot Hannah Crawley, an old settler, aged about 65, who died somewhat suddenly yesterday. Deceased, who was of intemperate habits, sold some property in Dunedin a few weeks ago and received £150 in cosh. Beyond making a present to her son of £20, no trace of the . balance of the money can be discovered. The fact of her having money attracted the usual parasites, and it is presumed that deceased was eased of her money. The ' evidence disclosed that the woman was found lying on the floor of the room she occupied in a semi-insensible state. Ths verdict of the jury was that death resulted through excessive drinking. Sunday. About 10 o'clock last night the offices - of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company were found to be on fire, but the fire brigade promptly turning out the building was not much damaged, the iire only charring the woodwork of the office in which it took place. Some i. of the papers in the office were destroyed, ' I but they are not supposed to be of much value. No one had been in the office since 5 o'clock, and the origin of the fira is unknown. Dunedin, Sunday. • The annual dinner of the " Old Boys " of the High School was held in the City Hotel last evening, and was attended by about 60 persons. Dr. Belcher presided, and read apologies from Dr. Stuart, Mr John Roberts (who was to have to replied to the toast of " The Exhibition "), • Dr. W. Allen, and Mr H. D. Bell, of Wellington. The toast of " The School " ' was proposed by Mr C. Kettle, who traced the history of the school from its foundation to the present day. Dr.' Belcher responded to the toast. Mr G. Thomson proposed "Absent Old Boys," and Mr G. F. Fraser responded. "Tha Exhibition " was proposed by Mr F. . Sfcellin, and the toast was, in the absence of Mr Koberts, acknowledged by Dr. Belcher, who said he was sure the exhibition would be a success financially, and predicted that it would also be a success socially and commercially. He was able to say from the connection he had with the exhibition ■ that very large provision had been made for amusements, as the best talent in Australia in all branches of amusement, dramatic and otherwise, had been secured. Mr D. Milne proposed " Science and literature," and Professor Parker and Mr A. Wilson (Rector of ths Girls' High School) responded. Tha other toasts were unimportant. The final trial football match was won , by the Blues by five points to three. Notwithstanding the state of the ground and of the weather, the game was a fast one, but was chiefly confined to the forwards, who effected several very fine dribbling rusheß. In the evening the following players were chosen to represent Otagoia the match next Saturday against • the native team :— Thomas Lynch, Turnbull, Downes, Cran, Crawford, Dunoan, ' A. Gibson (captain), W. Gibson, Isaacs,, A. Morris, Montgomery, Stephenson, B. Torrance, and Tattersallj emergencies, Restreaux and Sontag.
