Harriers v. .Napier.
A match between teams representing 'the Harriers and Napier Football Clnba was played en the Recreation Ground on Saturday. The following were the players :— Harriers : Full - back, James Fleming ; three-quarters : Percy, Height, and Koss; halves, Bunting and JNorris? forwards, M'Leaiij Wells, Mnsscn, Howard. Blazell, liticas, Bnssell, Hughes, and Spooner; umpire, Mr Harden. Napier : Full-back, N. Kennedy ; three- ! quarters, S. Bennett, Anderson, and jl Bryson ; halves, O'Connell and Miller ; - forwards, VonHaast, Stanton, Fleming, White, Bates, H. Newton, Peacock, Cato, and A. Newton ; umpire, MrF. Kennedy. The onerous position, of referee was filled by Mr M. M'Lean, The game proved a " much more even one than was anticipated, os the Harriers were looked upon as certain victors before play commenced. The match did, indeed, result in a, draw in their favor, as the Napier players were forced down no less than six times during the two i spells, but on the whole play was in favoi*i of Napier for nearly the first hour. After that the Harriers, although not having everything their own way, yet proved • , themselves such good stayers, and played _ with so much dash and determination, f\ that their superiority was manifest. The 4| first spell requires little description. Play " ■ throughout Was principally in the Har- . I riers' territory, and nothing but the I determined efforts of their backs pre- ■ vented a score on more than one occasion. I The spell, however, ended without a score on either side, the Harriers having nominally the best of it owing to having forced Napier twice, but in reality the forced team had proved itself much the stronger. This may have been due to the Harriers having a couple of their first team players away, and their places filled by emergencies, or it may have been partly due t) the condition of the gronnd, which from .' its swampy condition was not in favor of the style of play usually affected by the '" Harriers, but, whatever the cause, Napier played the stronger game. When sides were changed play changed also. The \ Napier men held their own for about ten 'H minutes,- but then had to fight all they know to prevent a big score by the other . ■ side. The" first approach to scoring was • reached wken the Harriers were awarded' a free kick for off-side play by their '■ opponents. Nothing came of it, however, p& Boss, after the oall was placed and \. dead, picked it up again for some reason, -'.' and a scram had to'be formed. A few. , - minutes afterwards the Harriers obtained .:•' another free kick for the baU'beinjf held, y and Boss kicked a goal. Thin seemed to ,''' pnt Napier on _ their mettle, ' and a v " splendid rush, similar to many which" 3 had taken place in the first spell, took :4 play well into the Harriers' quarters. Here- # -Napier obtained a' free kick for the ball : J being handled in a scrum, and White »\* kicked a'' neat goal,' thus making the Vitstl score equal. From this out the Harriers 4^l had all the best of it, Napier being forced? i-^ I down time after time in quiok'succesdon,i>jf»| and no side being called. with Napier! m^xM great trouble near their goal line; ! ,'Fot--Isil| the Harriers all the back' division piayedi&SgH well, and Norris and; JtSuntin? as! halves rendered good service. *All-the'for^fMds'S;^| afso played excellently, 'Vl ells being tKa^-WK most conspicuonß. .What was-wid'of ft'elpji^ Harrier, backs applies', to'' : th6se', '6l*tSeJi.i^iS Napier team. ;-,Anderson'playeJ-"aVgran|(^fa game; and Bryson exhibited good tackl(Dgo*;;gS powersiv, O'ponnell.and Miljerv'as li|lve(fj^y^^ were' conspicuous, and a'icleiferj'fblpbf^^g passing between O'Connell and; Anderson: : a^^ during 'thi <Brafc ;iß»i|yb|thy|iof^^^ montiori.'V~All-jhß^Napierior;wardspldyed^^^
