Much surprise is expressed here at the haste exhibited by the United States Government in sending warships to Samoa to take tlie place ot those destroyed in tlie recent hurricane. It is asserted that this action on the part of the American authorities was the only reason for the action of, Germany in despatching war vessels to Samoa.

The corvette Sophie, now sationed on the east coast of Africa, has been ordered to proceed to Samoa.

Captain Wi9sman has assumed supreme command of the German operations on shore at Zanzibar. The Nord Deutsche Zeituny denies that Captain Wissman has hoisted the German Imperial flag there, and states that the flag hoisted was only a mercantile one.
