NOTES BY "FETLOCK."

- -Mr-p. Bit tier has recently been, netting - some of those little fish which are proverbially sweet. At the North .Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting on the- 12th -••-..- --inst. his animals annexed no less than -';--'■ four events, three" of them being won by - - =" Marlborough, and the fourth by. Secre- - tary. These two horses are now in Wellington to take part, in the Island- Bay. Racing Club's summer meeting,' arid'Sthe green and white hoops should prove -.'■.'. successful in any of the' chief events' th'e victory will be well' received. Since Mr . Butler purchased Marlborough just. prior te the Canterbury Metropolitan meeting^ in November last, the horse has won several events, and has already repaid " his owner the purchase money. - - • Mr G. G. Stead has bestowed the name of Scots Grey on his yearling cohV"?by ' ' . Musket— Maid of Athol, and the names of Rose Argent, Musk Deer, and Croasier, * have been given to the fillies by Musket —Rosette, and Musket— Sweet Cicely, ond the colt by Musket or Leoliuus— Sister Agnes, respectively. It would be well if some of our other racehorse owners wonld take a leaf out of Mr Stead's book, as that gentleman's efforts' at nomenclature have usually been very appropriate, and the present instances are no exceptions to the rule. At the Onehnnga summer meeting on tbe 14th instant the principal event went to Lioness, by Leolinus— Miss Laura, and therefore half-sister to Mr G. Hunter's filly Lenore. The Selling Race and Flying Stakes were both- "won by Capella, by Cap-a-pie— Xantippe. , , Mr D. O'Brien haa re-sold Rewi to Mr C. Stratford, a jockey, who intends taking the horse over to the West-Csast of the - other island, where the son of Mute— Mina Mina should do considerably more than pay bis way. Mr VV. Y. "Dennett had a capital • mmngs at tbe recent Poverty Bayi-Jarf Club's meeting. His horses Warama and Bronte pulled off four of the " plums." of the meeting. Itinra and Miss Dargon also proved successful in winning a race each, so that with the exception of Mr D. Hepburn, who won three races with Duadine and Audacity, the Poverty Bay owners bad very little to divide between them. The New. Zealand Stnd Company "struck a patch" when they purchased tbo mares Patch, Radiance, Hippona, ahd Flenrette at the breaking np sale of Mr de Mestro's horses. Less than two years ago these four mares cost the company about 500 guineas, and already their offspring have yielded a return of 979 guineas.' , - • It is not yet definitely decided whether the two-year-old filly Pearlshell will go . to Australia. Her owper, Mr J. Mar- , shall, is very anxious to have a tiy for some of the good things on the other side, and if satisfactory arrangements can be made for trainine the filly- she is nearly certain to measure strides with Australia's best two-year-olds. The firat day of the Island Bay Raoing '- Club a meeting has passed off snccessf ully. ' The double of Cup and Hurdles has been won by Mr P. Butler's horses Marlborough and Secretary. The popular Canterbury owner certainly deserves the Blioe of took he has received, while Hawke's Bay sportsmen will rejoice to see that Mr G. Hunters filly Whisper got home first in both the Anniversary and Flying Handi- — caps. The Local Handicap resulted in Mute's half-T)rother Voltigeur beating The Shah and several others.
