(Received January 23, 10.30 p.m.) Tho Argus defends the Federal Council from the" remarks of The Times, and points to that and other English papers which have condemned the attitude of New South Wales in naming the colony " Australia" as unpatriotic. The Argus contends that the Federal Council was instituted rather for a conference on intercolonial subjects than for legislation, bnt tho latter avoids the delay requisite for Imperial interference, as evidenced by the promptitude with which CjHeensland has got control of the pearl fisheries. Mr Deakin has refused to bring back at the public expense those who wero arrested for being concerned in the Gourlay jewel robbory, and also the necessary witnesses, as it would be a bad precedent.
