A Boston philanthropist and student of human nature bought a dozen cheap umbrellas, had a nickel piste inserted in eaoh handle, on whioh were his' address and'^the request that the umbrella be returned, ' and; on the first rainy day went out onto the street, and banded one to eaoh umbrellaleu woman h» met. All were returned within a week but one, arid in place of that came a note saying .that it had been stolen, and the writer would pay for it. The next rainy day he handed the umbrellas to twelve unprotected men. He never saw but one of them again, and that was brought in by a friend -who Raid he had stolen it at a chnreh festival.
