DIOCESAN SYNOD.

The Synod opened at 4 o'clock. Present —The Right Rev. the Bishop of Waiapu (president), the Yen. Archdeacon Williams, the Revs. S. Williams, J. C. Eccles, A. S. Webb, F. K. T. Simcox, J. Fox, 0. Dean, T. H. Wills, J. Parkinson, A. F. Williams, W. Welsh, E. Roliertslinw, J. 1). Knipe, De Berdt Hovell, C L. Tnke, H, J, M'Lean ; and Messrs J. J.

Buchanan, C. A. Fitzltoy, J. N. AVilliams, H. Gaisford, W. Ellison, A. J. Cotterill, H. A. Banner, T. K. Newton, and R. C. Pasley. REPORTS. The following reports were read :— Report ot the committee on parochial returns. Report of the committee upon the means , adopted in the diocese for advancing the religious education of the young. Report of examiners of Sunday Schools. Report of standing committee. Report of Trust Board. Report of the business committee of the bishopric endowment fund. BUSINESS COMMITTEE. Mr A. J, Cotterill moved, seconded by Archdeacon Williams, "That the Synod go into committee to consider the report of the business committee of the bishopric endowment fund." The motion was carried, and the Svhod went into committee, Mr T. K. Newton in the chair. Progress was reported, and the Synod resumed. THE LAHUETn CONFERENCE. The Rev. 11. J. M'Lean moved, " That the Synod wishes the Bishop of the diocese ' God speed ' on his proposed visit to England for the purpose or attending the .Lambeth Conference, and trusts that he may be spared to return to his diocese with renewed strength for his arduous duties." The motion was seconded by Mr J. N. Williams, and carried unanimously.CLEnOY LIST. The Rev. De Berdt Hovell moved. "That the Right Reverend the President be respectfully requested to. supply the Synod with a list of the licensed clergy of the diocese for the purposes of title 8., canons 1, 2, and 3 of the General Synod, such list to be published with the proceedings of the Synod." The motion was seconded by the Rev. E. Robertshaw and carried, and .the President laid upon the table the list of licensed clergy required. WAERANOAHIKA NATIVE TRUST, Archdeacon Williams moved the second reading of the bill authorising the trnstees of the Waerengahika Native School Trust to let two acres of land to the Hawke's Bay Education Board for CO years as a school site. —Mr A. J. Cotterill seconded the motion, which was carried, and the Synod went into committee to consider the bill. — Some slight amendments were made, and progress was reported.— The Synod resumed, and on the motion of Archdeacon Williams, seconded by Mr A. J. Cotterill, the bill was made an order of the day for to-day. On the motion of Archdeacon Williams, seconded by Mr Cotterill, the bill authorising Waerengahika Native School trustees to apply for incorporation was read a second time and considered in committee. Progress was reported, and' upon the Synod resuming the bill was made an order of the day for to-day. „ MOTIONS. The following motions were carried, standing order No. 14 being suspended to allow of them being put without notice:— Moved by Archdeacon Williams, and seconded by the Rev. De Berdt Hovell, "That the report of the committee on parochial returns and accounts be adopted by the Synod." Moved by the Rev. De Berdt Hovell, and seconded by the Rev. J. E. . Fox, " That this Synod is of opinion that much good might be effected by the establish ment and extension of Sunday-school libraries — the privileges of such libraries to be free to all scholars." Moved by the Rev. De .Berdt Hovell," seconded by the Rev. E. Bobertshaw, "That this Synod requests the clergy of < the diocese to bring periodically under the notice of their congregations the great need, which is becoming every day more and more apparent, for the introduction of the Bible into the public schools of. the colony." i NOTICES OF MOTION. _ Notices of the following motions were given : — The Rev. De Berdt Hovell to. move, " That with a view to providing trained ' church-workers for Sunday schools and ] other purposes, this Synod is of opinion that wherever practicable, parochial guilds, or associations of earnest-minded ( churchmen should be formed." The Rev. De Berdt Hovell to move, i " That the report of the select committee upon the religions education of the young ' be adopted by the Synod." ] The Syuod then adjourned.
