TITLES.
Sir,— At the meeting on Saturday night, in replying to the interrogation why he took a title after talking against them, and saying r that there should be legislation against persons accepting titles, Sir Robert Stout said that in his Napier speech he had only objected to hereditary titles and that it was absurd to talk about an Act to prevent titles being taken. As a comparative stranger, I do not know what Sir Robert Stout may have said in Napier, but in Dunedjn he did speak in favor of legislation against the acceptance of titles, and his answer was therefore a quibble. When challenged in Dunedin , some few weeks ago about his inconsist- ' ency he could not say what he said on ; Saturday night, because he was talking : to people -who knew his utterances, so he ; said that he took the title because it would have seemed " snobbish " to refuse , it. I shall take care to forward Sir | Robert Stout's answer on Saturday to the L Otat/o Daily Times , where the utterances . re titles are common talk. — I am, &c, ' W. Barrett. Napier, July 31st, 18S7.
