The passengers and crew had a narrow escpe from drowning. .Swarms of Chinese boatmen looted the cargo, consisting of 4000 bags of sugar and sundries, as well as the whole of the fittings and effects, and attempted to sink the boat. — China is preparing to seize Port Hamilton directly it is evacuated by England, and the Japanese will consider this a direct menace, being a breach of a treaty concluded between the two countries, tinder which each should refrain from .sending troops to Corean territory. — The pacification of Tonquin is being rapidly effected by the French, though the Black Flags continue to push their victories over the Chinese troops. A serious fire occurred to-day iii George-street, Sydney, on the premises of Lloyd and Jones, mercers, Kenny and Jones, photographers, and Ferraris, wine seller. 'Die total loss is about £20,000. Lloyd and Jones's loss is £25,000. The insurances are as follows : — Commercial Union £3000, London and Lancashire £1500, Standard of New Zealand £1000, Equitable £1000, Scottish Union and National £2000, South Australian £500, Australian Mercantile £1500, New South A ales Cooperative £1000, Koyal £2000, National of New Zealand £1000. Kerry and Jones are insured in the Union Company of New Zealand for £1600, South liritish £600, and New Zealand Company £600. Ferraris is insured in the New Zealand Company for £1200. The premises destroyed are fully insured in the Norwich Union Company.
