THE TUKI TUKI BRIDGE.
Sir, — I see in your report of the last meeting of the Hawke's Bay County Council that Mr Sntton congratulated the Council on {jetting the bridge across the Tuki Tuki river constructed for such a small sum, and said that a few years a#o such would not have been thought possible. If Mr Sutton looks through the records •■ of- the Coutfoil'he will find (unless it has been burked) Mr Bold's estimate for a : • ' ' bridge (wiietj timber, was 25 per cent. ... .dearer- than: mow), and that is within a ■'■•.. -fewpoundsof tl«s amount of the accented
tender. Whether the bridge will not bt a failure, and turn out a veritable white elephant, i.e., a constant source of unremunerative expense, and whether the expenditure is not a wicked waste of 1 money in the face of other necessary j public works urgently calling for attention, scarce admits of doubf. The Petane bridge was constructed on the eve of an election, and has always been admitted to be a political dodge. The Tuki Tuki bridge looks marvellously like it, but from the voice of public opinion at Olive the result will be found the other way, and votes will not go to anyone who fostered a scheme fraught with ruin to Clive, and entailing an endless expense to the ratepaj'ers. — I am, &c, j Cliveite. Clive, June 24. I
