THE EMIGRATION RETUKNS.
The Boavd of Trade report on emigra- ■ tion and immigration from and into the ■ United Kingdom for the year 1886 has just been issued. The record of emigration from the United Kingdom shows a larger increase over the- preceding two years. At the same time the retnrn , current of immigration has continued to ijiminisli. The total number of emigrants tif British and Irish origin in 1886 was ' ' §3MOO', an increase on the previous year df 25;266. The increase in the number of ■ foreign- immigrants for the year was • 66,416, or 75 per cent. upon, the previous year. Tlife' total immigration for 18S6 . was- 108,879, of whom 80,018 were of . British or Irish .origin;- a 1 decrease on the • grevi6n3year'.of46m' .In 1886 the English emigrants numbered 146,801 V.the. the Scotch, J&J323V and' ,the Irish,' 01,276, the increase' -of Irish emigration on the . year being only t 2 per cent., of . 1259, while the increase of English^ and Scotch emigrants is nearly one-sixth. The Irish, emigration is 5 percent, below the average of the years ISSI-5. The "United States still attract by far' the greater number, 75 per cent, of tlic total emigration going there. Next to the United States in attractiveness is Australia, though the proportion of emigrants Siing there is not so large as in 1885. ritish North America, on the other hand, shows an increase both in the number and proportion of emigrants going thither in 1886 as compared with 1885. These colonies have received , 17,578 persons of British and Irish origin last year, as compared with 10,517 in 1885. The occupations of the emigrants TsUow "that of adult males 62.650 were described as general laborers, gardeners, " or carters, 'SO that about three-sevenths could lay no claim to technical skill. Liverpool is the port of embarkation for five-eigliths of the emigrants, London oneeighth, the Clyde for a tenth, and Qucenstowii the remainder.
