CLUB'S MEETING.

The usual May meeting of (lie above club took place yesterday at Knikora. The weather was all that could be desired by oycu the most fastidious of pleasnreseekers, and it seemed almost as though such tine weather mnst have been specially provided in honor of Her Majesty. There were but few Napier sportsmen who journeyed to Kaikora to enjoy their holiday, the counter attractions nearer home having apparently been more to their 'taste;- However, a good many of visitors from Hastings and other stations along the line helped to swell the number of spectators, awl by the time the tirsfc race started there -were " nearly 1000 people on the ground. The course, owing to the ■ recent vain, was very heavy, which prevented fast time being made, and materially affected the chances of many of the horses. The sum of £1136 was put through Messrs Stock and Cohen's totahsator.. The officials of the club worked very energetically to make everything pass off smoothly, and it is iv a great measure swing to their efforts that the meeting was a success. Some of the races were very good, the finishes being close and exciting, and taking all things into consideration, those present muht have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The racing commenced with the Handicap Hurdle Race, for which Denbigh was selected favorite, but she disappointed her backers by falling at the first hurdle, and Bide-a-wee also making a mistake the event proved a victory for Romeo. The Selliug Race was easily appropriated by Firefly, and this horse also boiled over the pot in the principal event, the May Handicap, puttingdown the great "moral" Salisbury. The Hack Hurdle Itoce mid Hack Kace were both secured l>v Echo. The last event of the day was the" Kiyinf Handicap, for which Salisbury was againk in most demand, and this time ho jusliA h'ed the confidence of his backers b\^ winning easily, though Lad not Water Color displayed her usual bad temper at the post and refused to join her company, the result of the race- might have been different, The following are the results of the various events :— HANDICAP HUKDLE KACE, . This was a capital race all the way round, and a most exciting finish resulted in Echo securing first place by a neck. There were 166 investors in the totalisator • dividend £4 7s.
