OMEN'S TEMPERANCE UNION.

[Communicated.] The second annual convention of tho •lational Women's Christian Temperance jnion was held in Christchurch during he last week in February, Mrs. Dudley ( Yard presiding. Delegates were present rom Auckland, Dunedin, Ohristchurch, tangiora, Ashburton, Port Chalmers, aud nvovcargill. The report showed that although some \ if the Unions bnd severed their connection vith tbe head body the membership had ■ ncreased during the .year, and that a large inioiint of unostentatious work had been lone. In Dunedin £400 bad been raised or a Sailors' Rest, and a grant of land had jeen given for the same object^ Mrs Miller gave a most interesting iccount of work done in the Leavitt House, where 100 girls are being might needlework and other useful arts. Meetings avo held theve weekly for temlerance and evangelistic work; Mrs Miller mentioned instances of ringleaders >f tbe larrikin class baying been reformed, md having become earnest workers in this iraneb of social reform. Mrs Ward stated that at Christchurch ;he temperance booth at tbe agricultural show was an immense success, Avhile in (Vuckland steady, continnous work of a reformatory character had been done, with fairly encouraging results, and she hoped to establish kindergarten schools for the neglected children avlio at present swarm the streets. Tlie work done in Napier was favourably commented upon, especially tbe boys' reading room, the work among the Maoris, cooking classes, &c. The election of officers resulted as follows :— Mrs Colonel Packe, Christchurch, national president; Mrs Will, Dunedin, __ recording secretary ; Miss Sorley, Wanganui, corresponding secretary ; Mrs Wroughlon, Christchurch, treasurer. A hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Dudley Ward was carried by acclamation. The next convention will be held in Dnnedin. The officers and delegates woro entertained at a garden party at Mrs Packe's country residence prior to leaving for their homes.
